DAYTONA’S ROOTS

Before the infamous Daytona 500, and its amazing track and amenities, there was nothing but beach and road. That never kept anyone from racing there. It would seem that spot was just made to be raced on. Back then, the races were shorter and they were held on the famous Daytona Beach itself, literally run partly on sand and partly on the roadway nearby.

The stock cars that ran those races had special amenities to ensure that the sand they kicked up didn’t do damage to the cars, such as wipers and radiators. The races back then were held at 200 mile intervals. And out of those humble beginnings in the first part of the 20th century, the Daytona 500 was born.

DAYTONA TODAY

Now, Daytona 500 tickets are the absolute best way to get as close and personal as you can with some of the finest race cars of our time. Today the Daytona 500 is held in the Daytona International Speedway, which is where it’s been run ever since it’s first running in 1959.

The race itself consists of 200 laps that make up 500 miles, and during the race’s fifty year history, it has produced some real champions. Many people regard the Daytona 500 as the most important and perhaps most prestigious NASCAR race. It is definitely the race with the biggest purse for the winner, and is traditionally the first race of the NASCAR season. After a day full of thrilling activity, the winner is presented with the Harley J. Earl Trophy, and for one year, you can see the winning car at the museum next to the Daytona International Speedway.

SOME WINNERS

When you buy your tickets to the Daytona 500 this year, you won’t just get to see who wins the race, you will actually witness a piece of NASCAR history. The winners’ list of the Daytona 500 reads like a who’s who of NASCAR Celebrities. The first winner of this historic race was Lee Petty, the founder of the racing Petty family. Lee Petty won the race the first time it was run, in 1959.

Like father, like son, Lee’s son Richard Petty went on to top the list of multiple winners of the Daytona 500, having won it no less than seven times, in 1964, 1966, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1979, and 1981. Let us not forget the race’s fastest winner, who won the Daytona 500 at the thrilling speed of 177.602 miles per hour in 1980. Buddy Baker takes that prize. Several other famous drivers have not only won, but have done so several times, including both Dale Jarrett and Jeff Gordon, each having done so three time each.

If you only go to see one NASCAR race a year, make sure that you pick up your Daytona 500 tickets bright and early. In many ways, this is the race that stands at the pinnacle of stock car racing and you can bet that when you go out to see it that you are going to be seeing the best. This is an amazing outing, so make sure that you don’t go alone and that you have someone to share it with!
