Adolescence is the stage where you child is caught in between being adults or still being children. Sometimes you hang on to them for dear life afraid to let go. Life begins to change as a parent when raising a teenager. When it gets difficult to talk about certain things, books are the perfect tool to keep guide them in what you ought to have said but never had the nerve to or the right way of showing them. Below are some of the best books you can give to your teenager.

1. The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

Teenagers are not the only ones who are caught up with this book. Adults love these, as well. Thus, their massive popularity. This is a great book to help your young teen transition from being a child to being a teenager. The story focuses on the life of the young Harry and his journey to the fictional wizarding world where good defeats evil.

2. Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff

This book tells a story about a girl who is consumed by her imagination claiming that she is part of a top secret organization that exists to banish bad people. This book develops your teenager’s ability to make independent decisions. The exciting twist of the plot is when a psychiatrist tries to extract the truth from the girl, suspecting that the imagination is not really limited to the girl at all.

3. My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

This is one of the tear jerker novels that depict a typical story of a family. It is a drama between sisters wherein the one is struggling with leukemia and the other sister’s attempts to save her. This is a poignant novel that promotes the celebration of the love of family.

4. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz

A Pulitzer Prize winner of 2007 that tells a story of a young Dominican overweight boy who constantly struggles to be part of a normal teen environment but finds his interests (comics and sci-fi) are different from others. He also believes he has brought with him a family curse to never have luck finding love.

5. For One More Day by Mitch Albom

The story can be perceived as supernatural at first but transcends to a stirring plot of a man who gets to spend another day with his dead mother. It teaches our young readers the importance of being independent, the capacity to be strong and appreciate their parent’s lives.

These books will raise awareness of our young adult’s maturity and encourage them to have a positive outlook in life. The morals of the stories are not learned from schools or even within the family circle. This is the best tool for parents to use to understand and reach out to their teenagers in a subtle way.
