At this point in time, it wasn’t known how popular cars would eventually become. In fact, those responsible underestimated to a staggering extent. At first there was only one letter to use for each council which was then combined with three numbers. Having run out of combinations rapidly, two and three-letter combinations were introduced.

Even so, there was a limit to what could be done and so in 1963, another change was made. A further letter was used. This meant there were three letters, then three numbers and then another letter. The last letter also served to highlight the age of the car. Some letters weren’t used for this purpose. I, Q and Z were avoided.

By 1983, cars were so widespread on British roads that the number plate system again needed an overhaul and this was achieved in a fairly simple way by having three letters at the end and one at the start. The reversed sequence meant that the single letter, indicating the age of the car, was first.

In 2001, the new system was reaching the end of its lifespan and that is when the system we use today came into effect. These days, we have seven digits, as we did with the two previous formats, only instead of having the age indicated by letters, it is now indicated by a number. There are two digits. The second is the year and the first – either a 0 or a 5 – indicates which half of the year the car was registered. This is combined with two initial letters and three which follow.

Those first two letters provide further information about the car. They state the area of the country where the car was registered, so NE will mean the car is from the North-East.
