Denny faced a very tough day at the 2.66 mile Talladega track, where it’s not how good you are, but how lucky you are.

Denny Hamlin hung back early in the race. This was simply to try and avoid the “Big One”. Commonly referred to as the big wreck that takes everyone out. Denny took it a little to easy early in the race and lost the draft.

After losing the lead pack, Denny ended up going a lap down. Denny would have to hang on in the front of the pack and try to get the lucky dog. During a round of green flag pit stops, Denny lost the lucky dog. When a yellow came out, Denny wasn’t able to get his lap back.

During the Yellow Flag pit stops Denny and his crew chief were arguing about whether should stay out, gain his lap back and wait for a yellow, or if Denny should stay a lap down, come pit and get the lucky dog later. Fortunately both calls would have worked out, Denny pitted stayed a lap down, and the next caution, he barely got the lucky dog position.

Hamlin raced very hard from here on out. Kyle Busch, his team mate pushed him to the front. They were not able to hold onto the top positions and soon fell back.

As the race dwindled down, Denny made his way up to seventh and had Mark Martin pushing him and Gordon and Johnson on his sides. Mark Martin quit pushing Denny leaving him all on his own, Jimmy then violently threw the car down below Denny to get in front of Mark Martin. Denny was left with NO drafting help, luckily the caution that brought the race to a Checkered Flag finish, kept Denny from falling back any further.

Denny could have had a much worse day. Luckily Denny came home with a 9th place finish, while Johnson got 7th. Denny is now only 14 points behind Johnson.

Despite a late race flat tire that necessitated an unplanned pit stop, Denny Hamlin raced like a madman down the stretch and took the checkered flag at Monday’s Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 NASCAR race at West Virginia’s Martinsville Speedway. It was Hamlin’s third career victory on the oldest track on the NASCAR circuit.

Hamlin’s success at the track didn’t escape unnoticed by NASCAR betting enthusiasts, and those that backed him as a +750 choice to win received a nice payday. Series points leader Jimmie Johnson was the betting favorite for the race. Hamlin won the fall race at Martinsville last year and won this race in 2008.

Giving up the lead with ten laps remaining to head to the pit for fresh tires, Hamlin drove like a man possessed to regain the lead and take the victory. He somehow moved from 9th place to the lead in just four laps, and talked about his wild ride after the race:

“That’s hard to do. I had to bully my way through there towards the end, but everybody was just running into everyone. I flattened my tire with Matt Kenseth going down the backstretch and just somehow made it work.”

Hamlin got around seven time Martinsville winner Jeff Gordon with help from teammate Joey Logano in the shootout during the final laps and held on for the victory. Race favorite Jimmie Johnson finished 9th, which was good enough to give him the overall series points lead. Greg Biffle is second in the standings, with Matt Kenseth in third.

NASCAR will head to Phoenix, Arizona for the Subway Fresh Fit 600 a week from Saturday before moving on to Texas for a race April 18th. They’ll then head to the superspeedway at Talladega, Alabama for the second restrictor plate race of the season on April 25th.

Denny Hamlin ended a sophomore slump of sorts when he won the rain delayed Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway. The win was Hamlin's first of the season and broke a 50 race winless streak. His last victory had come in 2008 at Martinsville Raceway.

Denny Hamlin ended a sophomore slump of sorts when he won the rain delayed Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway. The win was Hamlin’s first of the season and broke a 50 race winless streak. His last victory had come in 2008 at Martinsville Raceway.

After the race, an emotional Hamlin dedicated the victory to his grandmother who passed away late last week at the age of 91. His grandmother reportedly followed his career closely and watched every race:

She understands the competition of the sport and she understands how much she means to me. Like today, she’s pretty proud. We definitely had some angels with us today.”

Hamlin has always raced well on the unique triangle configuration track at Pocono. He swept both races here as a rookie in 2006 and after the race his boss J.D. Gibbs made note of that fact:

I told him earlier, we’re going to lobby for a few extra races at Pocono”

Hamlin moved up to fifth in the NASCAR championship points standings after the victory. Tony Stewart increased his lead over Jimmie Johnson to 197 points with a top ten finish.

Montoya finished second, and now stands in 8th place in the overall points standings. Clint Bowyer finished third and expressed pleasure with the solid performance in his postrace comments:

“Things haven’t been going our way all year long so it feels good to have something swing our way.

Former Indy Car driver Sam Hornish, Jr. took fourth. Kasey Kahne rounded out the top five.

Points leader Stewart will have a good opportunity to increase his lead this weekend, as NASCAR heads to Watkins Glen, NY to race on the road course there. Stewart is considered not only the best road course driver among current NASCAR competitors, but arguably the best of all time. The following week NASCAR travels to the Michigan International Speedway for the CarFax 400.

by Sharon Lee

A great way for someone new to get into the sport of pocket bikes is by buying the first bike used. This saves from putting thousands upfront on something that you might wreck in two runs therefore allows for a learning bike while saving lots of money in the beginning.

If you are meticulously shopping around and researching your options, it will give you a much better idea about what pocket bikes are about. But just as buying used has its benefits, it is important to consider the risks when trying to get find a bargain.

In fact, the concept quite closely mirrors buying a used car which is something many more people are familiar with. Buying a used pocket bike is just on a smaller scale and a more restrictive market. But there are some things about buying a new bike that just lose out on when buying used.

One of the key considerations is warranty. If you buy a new bike that suddenly breaks down or stops working you can bring it in to the retailer or manufacturer for a refund, exchange, or repairs that are covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

Buying a used bike means, especially from a private owner, means no refunds or exchanges. If you are lucky and the bike is still under warranty, there is a chance the warranty is transferable to the new owner.

The problem is that most buyers don’t adequately inspect the bike, or never learned how to inspect the bike. Savvy pocket bike owners know when they have a newbie on their hands and this leaves the buyer vulnerable to being sold something that is worth much less than what they are asked to pay. Nobody wants something that is in poor condition when they pay the price for a quality product.

Still, if you take enough precaution can be a huge advantage to buy used despite the risk because the risk can be minimized and you could save as much as fifty to seventy-five percent compared to a new bike. This is important because pocket bikes are like cars, the depreciation hits hard and fast as soon as it’s driven off the lot, or in this case taken out of the box.

What really helps the financial situation is the fact that resellers can usually be worked for a better deal. It is pretty much expected to negotiate a little when buying a used car or in this case, a pocket bike. The asking price and agreed price usually will yield a deep discount for the buyer. This allows you to get a great pocket bike at a fraction of the cost for a new bike.

Though his fame would be eclipsed by his son Richard, Lee Petty was a very successful race car driver in his own right and a pioneer during the early days of the sport. His legacy includes not only his son, better known to NASCAR fans as “The King” Richard Petty and Petty Enterprises has fielded race teams for four generations.

Lee Petty was one of the first businessmen car owners in a day when many NASCAR drivers were moonlighting (or daylighting) bootleggers and moonshine runners. He raced in the very first NASCAR stock car race ever on June 19th, 1949. Among his many firsts in the sport is the dubious distinction of bringing out the first caution flag in NASCAR history. To chronicle his achievements in the sport in a nutshell, he won 50 Cup races, including the first one ever on a paved track. He also caused his share of trouble”todays driver fracases are mild by standards of Lees day and he was never a man afraid to mix it up. He once hit Curtis Turner over the head with a wrench after a race, and another time got into a fistfight during the pre race festivities. Lees two sons quickly joined the skirmish but the fight was ended by Mrs. Petty (Richards grandmother) swinging her purse”made heavier than the typical pocketbook by the .44 handgun she carried inside.

Back on the track, Lee won three NASCAR championships (the forerunner to todays Sprint Cup) in his career. He also got his son in the business, but things didnt get off to a good start for his offspring. Lees son would only race 9 times his first season ending up in the wall more often than not, and more than one occasion being put there by his own dad. Of course his son eventually turned things around, and went on to win a staggering 200 races. He is now known simply as The King”Richard Petty.

Lees career was cut short by a nasty accident at the 1961 Daytona 500, where his car hit a guard rail and flipped a few times. Lee suffered a number of broken bones and internal injuries. He raced a few more times, but hung it up for good in 1964. He remained involved in the Petty Engineering team for awhile, but soon figured it was in good hands with Richard and Maurice running the show. Never a publicity seeker, he lived out the rest of his life enjoying the fruits of his labor. An avid golfer, he played frequently until a few months before his death in 2000 at age 86.

Lee has a few entries in the NASCAR record books that might never be touched. He finished in the top five 231 times out of 427 races, and still holds the mark for best average finish for a full time driver at 7.6th place. Considering the times in which Lee raced”before big money sponsorships, against drivers who ran moonshine for a living, and on dirt tracks that werent always in the best of shape”that average finish mark is even more impressive and is a testimony to the toughness, dedication and courage of Lee Petty.

Unless you have more money than you can spend, learning how to tune your go kart engine is something you need to learn how to do. These engines, while small, can be tuned to quite a high level of performance if done correctly and with some planning. Most engines are of four main varieties, so let’s take a look at them first.

Go kart engines are divided into four categories. The most prized is an engine with an aluminum bore and two roller bearings. There’s one bearing on each side of the crankshaft. It’s fairly difficult to find, though, and probably not worth all the trouble it would take to find and then tune. The second type, a double-bearing steel bore is equally as popular. These two engine types win a lot of races.

The last two engines consist of engines of either aluminum or steel bores and a single roller bearing next to their crankshafts. Any one of these four engines can be very competitive if they’re built up properly and then tuned correctly. As for tuning, keep in mind that the most important activity – after regular oil changes — is the inspection and care of the single spark plug. Remove and inspect the plug on a scheduled basis, taking care to examine the electrode for signs of carbon build-up and any burnt or scored surfaces.

It’s important to make sure the plug is gapped to required spacing between the electrode and the plug firing tip. Take a gapping tool and run it through to make sure the spacing is between.025 and.030. If it isn’t, re-gap it and then reinsert it back into the engine. And don’t forget to check the plug’s wire for signs of cuts or any excessive wear. This can degrade engine performance significantly, if present.

The next step is to remove and inspect the air filter, and replace it if it’s too dirty or clogged. If not, just take a lightly-powered compressed air blower and blow it out. It’s also important that the fuel-air mixture going from the fuel line into the engine’s carburetor be adjusted. Just use a screwdriver to adjust the needle valve in the carb. Tighten it in a clockwise direction until fully down and then reverse it for 2.5 turns. After that, most other tuning will revolve around using timing lights to determine bottom and top dead center on cam rotation. Just download a guide on how to do so and go from there.

Learning to tune you go kart engine isn’t difficult. You’ll be doing it like a pro with some practice. It’s not very hard, either. Just ensure that regular engine maintenance and tuning becomes a part of all go kart racing activities to increase not only engine performance but also lifespan. When done right, it will add many hours of enjoyment to your hobby.
